Future Careers Post-COVID 19 Pandemic
- Through Video Call -
Ian : Oi Supri! Long time no see, where have you been? I can't seem to find you anywhere in this pandemic.
Supri : Well hello Ian! I rarely go outside tho, that might have been the answer to your question. How about you?
Ian : Same for me, it's too risky to go out especially when the virus could be anywhere and anytime. Anyway, what're your choices at college? Do you have any idea on what faculty that I should take?
Supri : I myself think that you should take the faculty of medicine, remembering that you are stronger in memorizing materials rather than calculating numbers. The faculty of medicine will be a great one for you!
Ian : Hmmm I guess it's debatable since I sort of hate blood and I also have a tremor which is very bad for doctors to have. How about you Supri? what are your abilities, if we can know our own abilities and limits it can also be a consideration of what you should take.
In the early of 2020, the Covid-19 Pandemic had made an incredible and a crucial hit to almost everything in this world. Schools are temporarily closed due to stop the spread of the virus, some offices tend to work online, and a lot of MSME (Micro Small and Medium Enterprises) bankrupt due to less demand in markets nowadays. Many common jobs that we used to see back in the old days were gone just because of this pandemic itself, and that's why a lot of new and emerging careers that aren't going to fade away in a short period of time are admired. Ian, Agus, and Supri have just graduated from their high school and are now going to enter the college world, they are confused about which jobs and careers that they are going to take in order for them to have a better future.

Supri : I absolutely agree with what you were saying, well referring to what you've just said I'm more to counting than remembering materials. I kinda like engineering but I'm afraid that I can't keep up because I sometimes lack motivation in studying especially when it's really hard to understand. From what I see in your daily activities I think it would be better for you to take faculty of Visual Communication Design since you are really good at it.
Agus : Heyy Supri and Ian!! long time no see, how are things? What faculty did you guys take??.
Supri : Agus my man, what were you up to?? what a coincidence we had, we were just talking about faculties to take. I myself wanted to try engineering but I still have doubts on it, while Ian is still confused about what faculty that suits him best. What do you think Agus? is it better if I take engineering??, anyways how about yours Agus?.
Agus : Well if that's the case I think you should go for it Supri! It's normal to have doubts in choosing something that can affect us in the long term. For me I do like studying nature and stuff, I think i am going to choose biology at Gajah Mada University. Hey Ian, you seem a little bit quiet, did something happen to you?.
Ian : It's nothing, I'm just afraid that if I make a bad decision I would have to stick with studying what I don't like rather than studying what I really like and admire, do you have any idea on what faculty that suits me best?. I'm having a really bad time choosing between VCD (Visual Communication Design) and School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics both in the Institute of Technological Bandung (ITB).
Agus : Well if that's the case, what skills and abilities that is dominant referring to those faculties? If your skills are towards VCD then you should take it!, and if SEEI is more dominant then take it!. It's vice versa really, it depends on your skills and abilities.
Ian : Yeah it does make sense, I think I'm going to take VCD instead (Visual Communication Design). But, how is the implementation of education in college is going to be? like is it going to be through zoom meetings or google meet? I don't really understand how it's going to be. I'm afraid that I wouldn't be as passionate as I used to back when we used to study offline, what can I do to prevent that from happening guys?.
Supri : From what I've experienced back in the old days, to stay motivated you should have a goal on what you want to accomplish in the future. It really helps me when I'm really at my lowest point, you should try that Ian.
Agus : Yeah I totally agree with what Supri has just said, just take VCD Ian. U will get used to it easily.
Ian : Okay then, I guess VCD is the faculty that fits me. I can finally relax and stop thinking about the options that I have to choose. Hmmm, but what about jobs that need a VCD graduate?
Agus : Nowadays jobs that are going to last long are an online-based company and VCD graduates are needed to fill those gaps in the design division. It is also one of the careers that are not going to fade away in a short period of time, you can apply to any huge companies and can get accepted pretty easily (that is if you are talented and also an expert in your field. In the future, I think you should apply to huge and rising companies that are going to need your skills.
Supri : Yeah but it's not that easy as well, you should have/develop a lot of skills and special abilities that differs you from other "rivals". Especially in private enterprises where it is very hard to apply there and you got a lot of rivals that want to take your spot as well.
Ian : It does make sense that companies are going to need VCD graduates, okay then I guess it sums up my question.
Agus : Since we are talking about jobs and colleges, I want to ask you guys something. What do you think about jobs that will last longer and will not vanish?, at least in a short period of time. Especially in this Covid-19 Pandemic where we are forced to work offline.
Ian : My guess is that app developers, software developers, and any jobs that are related to developing the internet world are going to thrive.
Supri : Yeah what Ian said was spot on, I also think that those kinds of jobs are going last long. But some important old-school jobs like engineering, soldiers, doctors, etc are not going to extinct in a while.
Agus : If that's the case then is a geologist's career go to last long?
Supri : Yeah, of course a geologist is still very needed almost everywhere that's related to studying nature.
Ian : It is, I don't think that there's a logical situation nor explanation where we don't need a geologists
Agus : Alright then thank you guys!, I almost thought that entering the faculty of biology is a bad idea haha.
Supri : No problem Agus that's what friends supposed to be, you should hold onto your decision and remember what your goal is in the future. Supporting and helping each other is what we should do. Anyways, knowing that we've decided on where we want to go to college.
Supri : I guess I have to go now, it's getting late, I have to go grocery shopping with my mother. See you!!
Agus : Oh well, you should be careful Supri, don't forget to obey the PSBB and new normal regulations!. It can save you and your loved ones from getting infected by Covid-19, stay safe!
Ian : Bye Supri!, take care and greetings for your family!
Supri : Yeah totally, bye see you next time. Good luck with your college!
- Supri has left the call -
Agus : If that's the case then I think I'm going to go now, I still have something to do. Goodbye Ian, pleased to meet you!.
Ian : Bye Agus, we should meet again sometime!. Good luck with studying at your faculty!
Agus : Totally! I'm looking forward to it, see you!. Good luck too Ian!
- Agus has left the call -
- Ian has ended the meeting -
They have ended the call with a great burden relieved from their minds, that's the conversation between three fresh highschool graduates that are going to enter the college world with lots of curiosity and confusion inside, by asking and giving opinions.
